Depression Vs. Contentment

Author:

Akramullah Syed

Description:

The tides of life sweep many people onto new horizons of hopelessness. Life without Islam leaves the weak in this world vulnerable to misuse and oppression. One of the worst forms of abuse is that which is perpetrated by a trusted person in one's life. And this is the sad scenario of many people throughout the world who have had this sacred trust breached by either family members or close friends of the family. The laws of Allah (swt), the Almighty protect the individual and society. But sadly these laws are too often not known or implemented. Satan, the enemy of man, calls for all that destroys the human being. Why do we find so many victims in the world of today - lost, isolated, whose minds feel constant pain and frustration - an inability to change what has occurred. An inability to wipe away the memories of terror and fear and replace it with peace.

Some issues not only affect the body of the human being but reach far down into the spirit and threaten to touch the delicate balance that coordinates the harmony between the body and the soul. Loss of confidence, feelings of guilt and inability to trust - fear of broken trust, fear of loss, fear of fear...

The state of the heart is the key to the balance of the essence of man and so it is no wonder that the traps of Satan are those which urge the physical desires on to acts that will tamper with and destroy the spirit.

However, Allah (swt), the Almighty tells us that the plans of Satan are weak! What joyous news this is for those who have been held in its dark clutches. For Satan works with illusion, while Allah (swt) is reality. Whatever we fear, cannot harm us for we know that only Allah (swt) is to be feared - for nothing occurs without His guiding hand and He guides to all that is good. He is the One who can turn evil into good.

The evil touch, the memory of betrayal can so easily be replaced with the remembrance that Allah (swt), His light and guidance can lift us far and away - beyond time and space - to a place of peace, where the dismal memories that cloud the mind are dispelled in a puff. The heart finds lightness, grace and wispy breezes of comfort in the words of Allah (swt) - the final message to man, that contains all the knowledge essential for our growth and overcoming of the evil within ourselves and in the world around us.

The victims of the world, have a greater potential for growth than any others. The spirit once touched, is open to light and guidance, softer and more compassionate to the pain of others and inner troubles of the mind stir the individual to walk the steep paths of life and thereby, through their sincerity and efforts find the vast richness of the Mercy of Allah (swt), which extends to the oppressed who with sincerity seek His ever present help.

May Allah (swt) bind the hearts of the victims to Him, that they will never give up in this journey of life. For every single person in this world carries some form of burden, some fear, some care, some disappointment, some loss - but nothing can harm the spirit, which is the essence of man which belongs to Allah (swt) and will return to Him, in the form in which it was molded in this world.

The decision belongs to us. We sink or swim. We strive or give up. But before we choose we must remember that Allah (swt) promises not to give us more than we can bear if we sincerely strive to follow His way, trusting in Him. Alone we will surely destroy ourselves, but with His ever Merciful help, nothing - absolutely nothing is impossible!

Allah (swt) burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. Above all, prayer and remembrance of Allah (swt) brings peace to the troubled mind and contains the only sure cure for the heart that cannot find peace. "Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us Forgiveness. Have mercy on us."

A Commentary on Prayer

mohsen gharati

 By: Mohsin Qara’ati

Translator: Mansoor Limba

Cultural Affairs Department Ahl al-Bayt World Assembly

Description:

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and may the blessings of Allah be upon our Master and Prophet, Muhammad, and his pure progeny, and may the curse of Allah be upon all their enemies.

I was glad to be present at the holy shrine of Imam ar-Rida (‘a) and to have started writing this booklet, the drafts of which I had prepared earlier, prior to the beginning of the (Iranian) New Year 1374 AHS (which commenced on March 21, 1995).

In line with the efforts made after the [victory of the] Islamic Revolution in establishing the performance of Islamic prayer [salah] in schools, universities, military garrisons, and other public places, I also decided—after writing the books, Partu-ye az Asrar-e Namaz [Radiance of the Secrets of Prayer], Hamrah ba Namaz [In the Company of Prayer] and Yeksad va Chahardah Nokteh Darbareh-ye Namaz [One Hundred and Fourteen Points about Prayer]—to write about a commentary on the recitals [adhkar] in prayer such as the takbir [recital of Allahu akbar at the beginning of the prayer] and the recital of Sural al-Fatihah and another surah, bowing down [ruku‘], prostration [sujud], tashahhud and salam so that we could understand better what we are uttering to God in this regard, and have a conscious and gnostic involvement in the act of worship.

Before embarking on the subject proper, let us first take a cursory glance at “Worship [‘ibadah] and Servitude [‘ubudiyyah]” which is the soul of prayer as well as all other devotional duties so as to better internalize its sublime station in our lives.

A Shiites Anthology

Shiites Anthology

Selected and with a Foreword by: Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Tabatabai

Translated with Explanatory Notes by: William C. Chittick

Under the Direction of and with an Introduction by: Seyyed Hussein Nasr

Description:

The Shi'ite hadith literature includes all the sayings of the Prophet of Islam accepted by Shiites as well as the traditions of the twelve Imams from 'Ali ibn Abi talib to the Mahdi(a.s). This collection is thus considered to be, after the Holy Quran, the most important body of religious texts for Shiites. As in Sunni Islam, so in this case: the Hadith forms along with the Revealed Book the basis of all the religious sciences, including of course the Shari'ah as well as religious life in both its intellectual and devotional aspects. No aspect of the life and history of the Shiites community would be comprehensible without a consideration of this body of inspired writings.

Description from the publisher:

Allah dispatched his Messenger Muhammad (pbuh) with guidance and the Religion of Truth. Thus he has conveyed the Message and discharged the duty he was entrusted with, and he has been a sincere advisor to the nation, and he has striven truthfully for the sake of Allah, up until that which was inevitable overtook him. So he left his nation upon a clear white path, its night being like its day, no one strays from it except that he is destroyed. He explained all those matters that his nation needed to know, to the extent that Aboo Dhar, may Allah be please with him, said, “The Prophet (pbuh) did not leave a single bird in the sky, that would flap its wings, except that he would mention to us some knowledge concerning it.” And no one of the mushriks said to Salmaan al-Faarsee, “Your Prophet even teaches you concerning the manners of relieving oneself!” So Salmaan said, “Yes he has forbidden us from facing the Qiblah while defecating or urinating, and he has forbidden us from cleaning ourselves with less than three stones, or with the right hand, or with dung balls or bone.” And Allah said in His glorious book, “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” Read, O seeker of truth, the pearls of guidance contained in this treatise by the noble Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen.

Forty Hadiths

Imam Khomeini

by:An Exposition By Late Imam Ruhullah al-Musawi al Khumeini

Translated by:  Mahliqa Qara'i

Published by: publication and propagation committee Headquarters for the 100th Birth Anniversary of Imam Khomeini.

Imam Khomeini's Purpose of Writing The Book:

I, a humble servant of God, was contemplating for some time, to select forty hadith from among the ahadith of the members of the Household of the Prophet (S) from the authentic books of the Sahabah, and scholars, and was trying to compile them with an appropriate explanation of each of them that can be applied to the general conditions of the people.I chose to write them in Persian, so that the Persian knowing people may also be benefited from them. God willing, this compilation would be an attempt to serve the command of the Prophet (S) who said:

From among my followers, one who shall preserve and protect my Forty hadith, so that my people may be benefited from them, God Almighty will treat him on the Day of Resurrection with great men of wisdom and learning (jurisprudence). Verbal Translation:

Al-Sukuni relates on the authority of Abu 'Abd Allah al-Sadiq (A): 'Verily on seeing the returning armies from the battlefront, the Prophet (S) of God said: Blessed are those who have performed the minor jihad, and have yet to perform the major one. When asked, what is the major jihad? The Prophet replied, "the jihad of the self" (struggle against self).

Hajj

By: Imam Khomeini (The Institute for compilation and Publication  of the Works of Imam Khomeini, International Affairs Department Post office box no. 19575/614, Tehran, Iran)

A Summery of preface:

Now that we are at the threshold of performing our auspicious religious precept of Hajj, it is necessary to consider its Gnostic, spiritual, social, political and cultural aspects. Many dedicated friends have already discussed the merits of the various aspects of Hajj and now I wish to make a brief and quick mention of some of its aspects hoping to serve as a reminder.

Since there are delicate Gnostic and spiritual hints in these wonderful rituals, from the beginning of putting on a pilgrim’s garb “EHRAM” through “TALBIYA” or “LABBEYK” (Lit, Here I am at Thy service), to the end, the details of which may not be explained in this discourse, I would only mention some indications of “TALBIYA”....

Our Philosophy

our philosophy

By: Allamah Muhammad Baqir As-Sadr

Type: Philosophy and Science

Translation, Introduction and Notes by :Shams C. Inati

Reproduced with permission by :the Ahlul Bayt Digital Islamic Library Project team

Description:

Our Philosophy is a collection of our basic notions concerning the world and the Islamic way of considering it. The book is divided into two investigations: The first deals with the theory of knowledge and the second with the philosophical notion of the world. The author discusses the disagreements among certain philosophical and dialectical methods upon which modern materialism rests. He goes on to consider the causal laws governing the universe and the conflict between materialism and theology. On the basis of this discussion, the author forms his notion of the world in the light of philosophical laws.

Finally, the author looks at the conflict between materialism and theology as it relates to knowledge and thought. He claims that thoughts are not mechanically conditioned by the requirements of the community. Rather, they are the result of free motives that induce one to create a system in harmony with one?s community...

Robert L Stevenson

(1850-1894)

Novelist and essayist, was born at Edinburgh, the son of Thomas S., a distinguished civil engineer. His health was extremely delicate. He was destined for the engineering profession, in which his family had for two generations been eminent, but having neither inclination nor physical strength for it, he in 1871 exchanged it for law, and was called to the Bar in 1875, but never practiced. From childhood his interests had been literary, and in 1871 he began to contribute to theEdinburgh University Magazine and thePortfolio. A tour in a canoe in 1876 led to the publication in 1878 of his first book,An Inland Voyage. In the same year,The New Arabian Nights, afterwards separately published, appeared in magazines, and in 1879 he brought outTravels with a Donkey in the Cevennes. In that year he went to California and married Mrs. Osbourne. Returning to Europe in 1880 he entered upon a period of productiveness which, in view of his wretched health, was, both as regards quantity and worth, highly remarkable. The year 1881 was marked by his unsuccessful candidature for the Chair of Constitutional Law and History at Edinburgh, and by the publication ofVirginibus Puerisque. Other works followed in rapid succession.Treasure Island(1882),Prince Otto andThe Child’s Garden of Verse (1885),Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde andKidnapped(1886),Underwoods (poetry),Memories and Portraits (essays), and The Merry Men, a collection of short stories (1887), and in 1888 The Black Arrow. In 1887 he went to America and in the following year visited the South Sea Islands where, in Samoa, he settled in 1890, and where he died and is buried. In 1889The Master of Ballantrae appeared, in 1892Across the Plains andThe Wrecker, in 1893Island Nights Entertainments andCatriona, and in 1894 The Ebb Tide in collaboration with his step-son, Mr. Lloyd Osbourne. By this time his health was completely broken, but to the last he continued the struggle, and left the fragmentsSt. Ives andWeir of Hermiston, the latter containing some of his best work. They were published in 1897. Though the originality and power of his writings was recognized from the first by a select few, it was only slowly that he caught the ear of the general public. The tide may be said to have turned with the publication ofTreasure Island in 1882, which at once gave him an assured place among the foremost imaginative writers of the day. His greatest power is, however, shown in those works which deal with Scotland in the 18th century, such as Kidnapped, Catriona, andWeir of Hermiston, and in those, e.g., The Child’s Garden of Verse, which exhibit his extraordinary insight into the psychology of childlife;Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a marvelously powerful and subtle psychological story, and some of his short tales also are masterpieces. Of theseThrawn Janet and Will of the Mill may be mentioned as examples in widely different kinds. His excursions into the drama in collaboration with W. E. Henley—Deacon Brodie, Macaire, AdmiralGuinea, Beau Austin,—added nothing to his reputation. His style is singularly fascinating, graceful, various, subtle, and with a charm all its own.

The Alchemy of Happiness

By Al GhazzaliTranslated by: Claude Field [b. 1863, d. 1941][1909]INTRODUCTION

KNOW, O beloved, that man was not created in jest or at random, but marvelously made and for some great end. Although he is not from everlasting, yet he lives for ever; and though his body is mean and earthly, yet his spirit is lofty and divine. When in the crucible of abstinence he is purged from carnal passions he attains to the highest, and in place of being a slave to lust and anger becomes endued with angelic qualities. Attaining that state, he finds his heaven in the contemplation of Eternal Beauty, and no longer in fleshly delights. The spiritual alchemy which operates this change in him, like that which transmutes base metals into gold, is not easily discovered, nor to be found in the house of every old woman. It is to explain that alchemy and its methods of operation that the author has undertaken this work, which he has entitled,The Alchemy of Happiness. Now the treasuries of God, in which this alchemy is to be sought, are the hearts of the prophets, and he, who seeks it elsewhere, will be disappointed and bankrupt on theDay of Judgment, when he hears the words, "We have lifted the veil from off thee, and thy sight to-day is keen."

God has sent on earth a hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets  to teach men the prescription of this alchemy, and how to purify their hearts from baser qualities in the crucible of abstinence. This alchemy may be briefly described as turning away from the world to God, and its constituents are four:

1. The knowledge of self

2. The knowledge of God

3. The knowledge of this world as it really is

4. The knowledge of the next world as it really is

We shall now proceed to expound these four constituents in order.

.CHAPTER I: THE KNOWLEDGE OF SELF
